There is hardly anyone who does not know about BBC – British Broadcasting Corporation. Yet there are very few who get to see what happens behind the scenes at this world well-known television center. The BBC Television Center located at the White City in London is the headquarters of BBC Television and is well-known for being one of the largest of its kind since the 1960’s. Over the years, various extensions have been made to maximise the potential of the building. One of the prominent additions have been the BBC White City located nearby built over 25,000 square meter of official building.

The center has been well-known for it being the milieu of many major shows of BBC. Though a sudden upsurge in property prices of the area due to the arrival of Westfield Shopping Center nearby threatened to pull it down, it has stood up by all odds and today is declared a protected building. There is but plans to sell off the building by the end of 2013 though this choice have met with a large and wide protest across the country.

The architecture of the building is quite fascinating as well. When you have a look at the building from the air, it looks much like a question mark, as visualised by its creator. Shaped like a doughnut, the circular central block gives simple access for cabling from all the vital rooms surrounding it. These include the studios, engineering areas, offices and of course the newly constructed News Center. The cables are located well at equidistance from the Central Apparatus Room.

The major attraction of the doughnut but remains the statue of Helios designed by T.B. Huxley Jones. Though initially a water fountain was plotted at this spot, its disturbing sound led to it being replaced by the gorgeous figurine. The place is absolutely stunning with some marvellously huge studios that promise you an exciting tour. But since the bombing late back in 2001, the visitors are subject to strict scrutiny much in the airport style.

This tour that could take up to two hours gives you a glimpse into the real world where the news is caught and brought live round the clock. The news room, dressing room, interactive studio games, and many other entertainment options await you at this fascinating world of BBC. The tours are conducted on all days of the week except on Sundays. You need to make bookings in advance and the cost of the tour is £9.50 for adults and £7.00 for children.
